On Thursday March 14th, I went to my favorite getaway, Colt Creek State Park. This was a one night camping trip focused on doing some Plein air painting and getting away from civilization for a while to recharge the human battery.
My goal was to complete two Plein air paintings, one at night and one in the morning. After a scouting bike ride trip I was able to find my painting location for the evening. It was a spot I had never seen at the park. At the edges of the state park there is a border that one side is the Colt Creek State Park and on the other is the Green Hampton trail. Separating these two areas are power lines. I chose this area to create a story of how no matter how far we go in nature, there's a mark left by humans. It was a beautiful scene full of color. Unfortunately, I was only able to paint for about 4o minutes. I was over taken by bugs in the field that apparently were immune to bug spray. It was a good trip though because I tried a different set up of painting (lighter weight easel, field chair, and my travel palette). I also tried out a new painting surface, a watercolor canvas. I'm still on the fence whether I like this surface or not. They'll be more in the video of my reasons.
The second location in the morning was the main lake of the park, Mac Lake. It wasn't my first choice of location to paint, but due to time constraints it had to do. It was a good experience though because the first time I painted at that location I used acrylic paint on canvas. This time I opted to do it in watercolor on 300 lb watercolor paper.
As always, the trip was filmed and I'm currently editing it for the Plein Air Series. I'll post an update once it's completed. To get immediate notifications, either give a like to the Soundingboard Studios YouTube channel or sign up on our website.
